From the Fat of the Land: Alchemies, Ecologies, Attractions
April 7, - July 27, 2007

after having attended an inspiring lecture given by: Shamim Momin, Associate Curator for the Whitney Museum of American Art and Branch Director and Curator of the Whitney Museum at Altria, at Grand Arts in April about ritual in contemporary art, I was really looking forward to attending the closing reception for this show.

Micaela O’Herlihy was the artist whose work spoke to me the most: dream-like 16mm film, in color... film running through a contraption spanning the length of the room. The soundscape was what put the final touches on my being sold, and contrasting my reaction to the rest of the work in the group show. (It was all very beige) I was specifically disappointed in the presentation of the Spurse project. It lacks something welcoming, almost to a point where I feel as though a joke might be being played on me as a viewer. But for now I'll give them the benefit of the doubt, as I liked something about it, and heard the project was still in mid-process.

*sometimes when I see work in Kansas City by artists who have been subsidized by local grants, I suspect they don't necessarily invest the grant money into the work presented in Kansas City... but that's just my judging heart and suspicious mind talking. (or is it the other way around?)

this show was the first one I'd seen this summer in Kansas City. I was pleased by the "easiness" of the work, and moved by the idea of expressing something so basic as kindness within our contemporary environment. so basic that I wonder if his work is taken as some kind of cynical... know what I mean? I made a point to shake his hand, and that was nice.

this show interests me, as it has many of my peers. been thinking about how we respond as artists to our current environment, specifically in regards to changing things. we've been very quiet and this show is quiet as well. feels kind of like admitting that secrets have been passed around in code, and I wonder what the next step is, in regards to making and sharing work.

to be honest, I was far more affected and inspired by seeing Erykah Badu

and Morrissey

perform in Anaheim and the Hollywood Bowl, earlier this Summer.
